Deer Harbor was once a place where the Salish tribes gathered
for potlatches and great salmon feasts.
The
Dragonfly Garden is situated on three acres of farmland just north
of the Cayou Cove estuary near Deer Harbor. The harbor and nearby waters
have recently been identified as being the richest in biodiversity of
all our islands.
Before the European settlers discovered the islands, many
Indian tribes lived here. There was an abundance of seafood and cedar
trees. Clans celebrated bountiful harvests in the summers and made beautiful
canoes, baskets, hats, blankets, and other items in the winter months.
This area was a trading center between tribes. People would come in canoes
and gather for potlatches to share their wealth.
Deer Harbor was a particularly important gathering spot
because of the abundance of fish and because it was easily identified
from sea by the head of Turtleback Mountain. Many people would return
to this harbor after fishing to relax and feast together.
The landscape of Deer Harbor changed in the 1900s with the arrival of
agriculture and clear cutting of the islands for the Lime Kiln industry.
Our meadow was cleared and seeded with grasses for feeding livestock.
A small seasonal "ditch" called Fish Trap Creek on the edge of our meadow
used to be one of the most prolific salmon runs in the islands. A restoration
project is now in progress to restore the stream by reconnecting it to
upland ponds, and re-establishing the health of the estuary where it
empties out to the sea.
As modern day stewards of this garden and land,
we have a deep respect for Nature and the
living community of the surrounding landscape. We have chosen to hold
in our hearts the intention of our 3 acres being
a Sanctuary for Nature and Peace. The garden continues to attract many
people, for varieties of reasons. We are very happy to share its energy
and beauty with you.
Weddings, ceremonies, and private tours may be set up by appointment. Deer
Harbor is just a few minutes away, if you are interested in lodging,
whale watching, sea kayaking, biking, and hiking. Our classes
and workshops are held in the summer. A visit to the garden for peace
and contemplation may be a perfect part of your island vacation/retreat.
Contact us if you are interested
